Baby Milk Action
Baby Milk Action is an independent non-profit organisation which campaigns to protect breast-feeding and to halt the promotion of artificial feeding. We raise awareness of the dangers of artificial infant feeding and campaign for improvement to the labelling and composition of artificial feeds.

Back Care
Formerly known as the 'National Back Pain Association'. National charity which concentrates on the issues and needs of people with back pain. It is dedicated to reducing the incidence of back pain through research, education and support. It has formed and supported branches nationwide. Back To Work
Back care training service which also provides preventative and curative therapies. Courses include back schools; patient handling and industrial handling courses; management seminars for private and public sector organisations. Training covers principles of backcare, stress and how to reduce sickness absence. Sale of back care and relaxation products, books and tapes on mail order.

Barnardo's
To help people achieve their full potential i.e.help a young person with a learning disablity / work with families under stress to help them enjoy a healthy and stable family life-style .

Bath Institute of Medical Engineering
This is an independent body that designs and tests prototypes and arranges clinical trials of new equipment for hospitals and special aids for sick and disabled people. It aims to promote the design, development and manufacture of equipment and actively encourages suggestions for design projects from occupational therapists and disability groups. BIME is particularly interested in ideas for pieces of equipment which do not exist at the moment but, if designed and made available, would fulfill a general need amongst people with disabilities or in general healthcare.

Beaumont Society
A self-help organisation for all those who cross dress. It provides a nationwide support group. Membership fee includes a quarterly magazine.

Benefit Enquiry Line for People with Disabilities
Benefit Enquiry Line (BEL) is a national, free telephone advice and information service for people with disabilities, their carers and representatives.

Big Print Ltd
This is a unique national weekly newspaper set in bold type more than twice the size of other newspapers. The paper reports national and international news, but also includes radio and TV listings, brainteasers, sports news, recipes, large print book reviews. Telephone helpline for subscription details.

Birth Control Trust
Advance medical and sociological research in birth control methods, publish the results; educate the public in procreation and contraception to prevent unwanted births.

Birth Defects Foundation
Aim to improve child health in the UK by funding and promoting basic medical research into all birth defects. Provide support to people awaiting the outcome of tests or having received a diagnosis. Can refer on to specific organisations where appropriate.

Black Taxi Tours Of London
Enable sightseers to see London by Taxi. Provide a commentry from the taxi driver on all the sights of London which allow access to places where buses can not go. Each tour lasts two hours and people can combine or modifiy tours to accomodate a special interset. Also offered are guided taxi sight seeing tours by night. Cost o65 per taxi, holding up to five people.

Bobath Centre for Children and Adults with Cerebral Palsy
The Centre provides Bobath occupations, physio- & speech & language therapy (outpatient only) on an individual basis, and teaches parents and carers how to continue therapy at home or in school. A letter of referral is required from the child's consultant paediatrician or GP giving a full medical history and birth details. Letters should be addressed to the Principal. On the basis of this information an application for funding may be made to the NHS. The Centre organises post-graduate training courses in the Bobath treatment approach for physio-, occupational, & speech & language therapists.

Body Positive
National body for body positive groups, support groups for people diagnosed HIV positive providing information, and health promotion services.

Break
Break provides a wide range of care services for disabled children and adults, with the focus being holidays and respite care. BREAK's other work give disadvantaged children, adults and families with special needs the help they need to build a better future and fulfil their potential.

British Acupuncture Council
The British Acupuncture Council works to maintain common standards of education, ethics, discipline and Codes of Practice to ensure the health and safety of the public at all times. It is also committed to promoting research and enhancing the role that traditional acupuncture can play in the health and well being of the nation.A full register of members is available for o3.50 and a free list of local practitioners is available to the public by phone, fax or e mail.

British Agencies for Adoption and Fostering
BAAF is the leading organisation promoting the interests of children separated from their families. Our members are primarily social workers, local authorities, legal and medical advisors, and social services departments. We ussue practice guidelines and are consulted on legislation and policy. We also produce a wide range of publications and leaflets for professionals and public. Our bi-monthly newspaper, Be My Parent, profiles children awaiting adoption and a free copy is available on request. BAAF also campaigns to bring the needs of children in care into the public eye and organises National Adoption Week

British Association of Prothetists and Orthotists
Represents and protects the Prothetic and Orthotic Profession with regard to its status and interests. Do not take enquiries from members of the public.

British Bathroom Council
The BBC is the trade association representing 27 UK manufacturers of bathroom products. Provides free information fact sheets on all aspects of bathroom refurishment.

British Brain and Spine Foundation
Launched in 1992, the Foundation's aim is to improve the prevention, treatment and care of neurological disordersof the brain and spine. By funding medical research and developing national education programmes, the British Brain and Spine Foundation is working to increase the knowledge and understanding of neurological disorders throughout the medical world and general public

British Colostomy Association
An information and advisory service. Emotional support is given on a personal and confidential basis by helpers. Free leaflet and listings of local contacts available. Can arrange visits in hospital/home on request.

British Computer Society
A group set up to investigate and develop ways in which computer technology can help training and employment. Also produce a quarterly magazine.

British Computer Society Disability Group
The prime aim of the group is to demonstrate to employers and the public that IT is a tool for equality and empowerment. The group represents the interests of disabled people, as they relate to IT, to government, and works with the computer industry to encourage producers of hardware and software to consider disabled people at product design stage, identifying shortfalls in the provision of services as well as equipment. Group projects include production of a magazine and newsletter, a pool of volunteers to assist with IT in the home, arranging meetings and conferences. British Council of Disabled People
BCODP is a national umbrella organisation representing over 120 groups of disabled people. Since 1981 BCODP have been campaigning for full civil rights legislation for all disabled people. BCODP now offers an individual membership and supporters scheme and a publications list will be provided on request.

British Dental Association
National professional association for dentists, has guidelines on safe sterilisation and surgery hygeine. Provides details to dentists about legal issues, and health and safety issues to do with dentristy.

British Diabetic Association
To provide information and research for the benefit and service of people with diabetes and those interested in diabetes. Publishes information sheets, leaflets, books and videos

British Disabled Flying Club
Aims to assist disabled people to get airbourne. Hosts flying days at which those with disabilities can fly and find out what adaptations they need if they take up flying. Membership o10 per annum.

British Dyslexia Association
THE BDA is a national charity acting as a co-ordinator for about 100 independent local dyslexia associations and 65 corporate members.The aim is to improve awareness of dyslexia through information, education & training. British Epilepsy Association
Provides help and information for people with epilepsy, their families and carers. Over 130 branches offering local self-help and support. Provides information and support to individuals on a face to face basis. Range of literature and audio visual materials available. Helpline runs 9:00 - 4:30 Monday to Thursday, 9:00 - 4:00 Friday.

British Geriatrics Society
Service targeted at medical proffessional to promote high standards of health for older people at home, in hospitals, nursing and residential homes.

British Humanist Association
To advance humanism and mental and moral welfare. The BHA advices and campaigns on moral issues from a non-religious viewpoint; provides humanist teaching materials; and organises non-religious ceremonies for funerals, weddings and baby-namings. The BHA is the leading UK organisation representing the non-religious. It provides its members with fellowship and support through newsletters, local group, campaign networks and conferences.

British Institute of Learning Disabilities
Provide services for carers and families of disabled people; offering training and support. They also have a resources centre which is open to the general public on an appointment basis. Also produce a wide range of publications on the issues of learning disabilities.

British Leprosy Relief Association
Aim to achieve the complete eradication of leprosy through-out the world by using multi-drug therapy and the most upto date methods of treatment available. Promote active research into the causes, cure and prevention of leprosy.

British Liver Trust
BTL support, inform & advise people with liver diseases & carers. They further carry out research into the prevention of livers diseases & advise healthcare/medical professionals & the general public. The helpline is open daily between 10.00am - 3.00pm

British Lung Foundation - Breathe Easy
Supplies information leaflets, Breathe Easy Club Newsletter; and organises local support groups for people who have breathing problems and related illnesses.

British Medical Acupuncture Society
Society for Doctors who are trained in and practice acupuncture. Area lists of practioners and patient information available from the office. Training offered to medical practitioners only.

British Medical Association
Provide information and advice on issues reltaed to health to healthcare professionals. Promotes education and about HIV, AIDS and sexual health, especially ethical and policy aspects. Welcomes enquiries and request for information/advice from anyone with a professional interest, particularly health professionals, but not general public.

Provides information and emotional support for families involved in organ donation and transplantation.

The Britsh office of the largest non-governmental vocational education system in the world. Its parent body World ORT Union was founded in 1880 to train needy Jews in Czarist Russia

British Polio Fellowship
Represent the needs of people who have or may yet have polio, to enable them to take their full part in the life of the com,unity, to offer support to all such people resident in the UK and Eire, whether they are members or not.Offers support to people who have had polio and their carers. Branches throughout the country. Arrange a number of social activities. Produces a bi-monthly magazine 'Bulletin of the British Polio Fellowship' on issues related to Polio. Advertisements for second hand equipment may also be placed.

British Radio and Electronic Equipment Manufacturers Association
Trade association which can provide current information on commercially available hi-fi, television and radio equipment. It may be able to research equipment with particular design features.

British Register of Completmentary Practitioners
Aims to be a focus for all people interested in all forms of Complementary Medicine. Keeps a register of Complementary Practitioners. All practitioners are listed on their web site

British Society for Music Therapy
The societies aims are to promote the use and development of music therapy. Hold meetings and conferences and have books and videos for sale and we have an information booklet (cost o3-00) that we send to people.

British Stammering Association
Offer support & information to people who stammer. They also assist in the research to a cure to stammering. Helpline Mon-Fri 9-5

British Standards Institution
The BSI was the first national standards body in the world. There are now more than 100 similar organisations which belong to the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Standards are drawn up by all those who have a particular interest in the subject, i.e. manufacturers, users, research organisations, government departments and consumers.

British Telecom - Age and Disability Team
British Telecom's Age and Disability Team provide help and advice on products and services for disabled and elderly people. These are featured in their 'Guide for People who are Disabled or Elderly'. BT staff can visit customers who are unable to get out of the house to assess their needs. They are also available for talks/presentations to groups, clubs and professional bodies who are interested in BT's products and services. They employ specialist community engineers who do not make a charge for their visit and can carry out some work free of charge. They are in charge of a Free Priority Repair Service which gives a higher priority on customers lines should a fault arise. This can be given only to disabled customers.

British Wheel of Yoga
The BWY is a national charity that aims to encourage and help all persons to a greater knowledge and understanding of all aspects of yoga, and it's practise by the provision of study, education, and training. They aim to cooperate with and support other organisations having similar aims, and to maintain and improve standards of teaching.

British Wheelchair Sports Foundation
The Foundation aims to develop support for people in wheelchairs including training teams to participate in international events. It hosts annual national and international events for all ages and abilities and is responsible for financing and running the Guttmann Sports Centre and the adjacent Olympic Village. It is the governing body of wheelchair sport for men, women and children paralysed by injury to the spinal cord and other related disabilities. Supports research into Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) and related conditions. Provides financial help for specialist equipment, short to medium term loan of same.

BSTA
British Surgical Trade Association Education and Training Trust is a trade association for 280 health care companies which supply products and services for people with special physical needs. It represents companies in the areas of healthcare, furniture, mobility equipment and wheelchair distribution, occupational health, orthopaedics, prescription appliances, prosthetics, rehabilitation, stoma and continence care and surgical instruments.
